Rank 7-5: Exploring the Most Promising 10 NBA Prospects of 2023

In-depth analysis on the top 10 NBA Draft 2023 prospects, 7-5th

Building Blocks: Exploring the Most Promising 10 NBA Prospects of 2023

Counting down to the 7-5 rankings, continuing on from my earlier piece here.

  1. Ausar Thompson

    6-6 guard | 20 years old | Overtime Elite

Ausar Thompson, the twin brother of Amen Thompson, is a dynamic big guard blessed with elite athleticism, exceptional lateral quickness, impressive speed, explosive leaping ability, and an unwavering high motor.

The indicators of success transitioning from Overtime Elite to the NBA still hold a degree of uncertainty, as we have witnessed only one player, Dominick Barlow, make the leap from Overtime Elite to the NBA thus far. However, if we were to consider these indicators as a reliable measure, Ausar Thompson's impressive numbers stand out. Averaging 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists on 48% shooting, along with a combined 3.5 steals and blocks per game, his statistics are nothing short of exceptional, especially the steals numbers, which historically translate well into the NBA as an indicator of success.

Offensively, Ausar Thompson displays his prowess as a driver and cutter, causing havoc for opposing defenses, particularly in transition. While he demonstrates an ability to attack the rim effectively, he would benefit from improving his finishing skills. Although his three-point shooting percentage is currently below 30%, he exhibits potential as a shooter, especially in catch-and-shoot situations, and has the mechanics to further develop his shooting ability. As a playmaker, he excels at driving and kicking out to open shooters, handling double teams with composure, and finding open teammates, particularly off ball screens.

On the defensive end, Ausar possesses the physical tools and athleticism to be an elite defender. He showcases solid on-ball defense, disrupts passing lanes with his size, and generally adheres to team defensive schemes when off the ball. With his combination of body and fundamental defensive skills, he has the potential to become an exceptional defender.

Ausar Thompson's upside as a guard is remarkably high, positioning him as a potential top-four pick in a hypothetical draft reassessment several years down the line.

NBA Player Comparisons: Trevor Ariza, Lonzo Ball

  1. Jarace Walker

    6-7 forward | 19 years old | Houston

Jarace Walker, a highly regarded five-star recruit from IMG Academy, brings exceptional size to this year's draft class, standing at 6'7" and nearly 250 pounds. Defensively, he stands out as one of the top prospects. His basketball IQ, combined with his physical attributes, enables him to guard multiple positions effectively. Whether it's defending on the ball or off the ball, Walker demonstrates a strong understanding of team defensive concepts, making the right reads, and exhibiting solid instincts such as when to go for steals or rotate to the correct assignment. As a help defender, he has the ability to impact the game across the court, resembling a free safety in his role.

On the offensive end, Walker's passing skills shine as one of his primary strengths. His ability to make the right play and find open teammates was prominently displayed during his time at IMG Academy before transitioning to Houston. Although he has played within a team system at Houston, limiting his opportunities to showcase his passing ability, glimpses of his passing prowess have been evident. Additionally, he has made strides in his shooting, shooting nearly 34% from three-point range on limited attempts. He is a solid cutter and possesses a reliable floater game. However, to maximize his offensive potential in the NBA, he will need to develop into a three-level scorer, improving his driving and finishing skills, as well as establishing consistency in his mid-range and long-range shooting. It's worth noting that his lack of offensive aggression could potentially limit his offensive upside at the next level.

With his defensive versatility and the potential for offensive growth, Walker is a strong candidate to be selected comfortably within the top 10 picks in this year's draft. NBA teams are always seeking versatile players in the mold of Swiss army knives like Draymond Green, and Jarace possesses the tools to enter that conversation

NBA Player Comparisons: Draymond Green, Lamar Odom

  1. Brandon Miller

    6-8 forward | 20 years old | Alabama

Brandon Miller, standing at an impressive 6'8" with great size, has emerged as one of the most elite shooters in this year's draft class. What sets him apart is not only his shooting efficiency but also his ability to do it at a high volume. Miller connected on an impressive 38.4% of his three-point attempts, taking more than 7 shots per game from beyond the arc. Additionally, his mid-range game, which received significant attention during his high school career, adds another dimension to his scoring ability. With his shooting prowess, Miller has the potential to become a three-level scorer in the NBA.

While his shooting skills are a standout, there are areas for improvement in Miller's game. His finishing at the rim and overall touch around the basket could use refinement. When it comes to creating his own shot, particularly in pull-up situations, there is room for growth. His catch and shoot game is smooth and pure, but developing his self-creation skills will be important for his overall offensive repertoire.

Defensively, Miller's impact is serviceable as he demonstrates a solid understanding of how to leverage his size and executes team defensive strategies effectively. However, his relatively lower athleticism compared to other wings in this draft class limits his defensive potential, which contributes to my ranking him lower than the consensus.

Overall, Miller's elite shooting and the potential to become a three-level scorer make him an intriguing prospect in this year's draft with a very high floor. With some refinement in his finishing and self-creation abilities, he has the opportunity to make a significant impact on the offensive end at the next level while being an above average defender.
